Why we don't drill techniques the old way

If you've trained jiu-jitsu before, your first class at Standard will feel different. There's less standing in line repeating a move 50 times, and a lot more live problem-solving.

That's by design. The constraints-led approach is built on a simple idea: people learn movement best by solving real problems, not by memorizing fixed sequences. So instead of drilling a technique in a vacuum, we play constrained games — small, focused scenarios where you have a clear goal and a live opponent. You discover what works for your body, against resistance, from day one.

The result is skill that actually shows up when you roll. Memorized sequences fall apart the moment your partner does something unexpected; instincts built through live practice adapt. It's also a lot more fun — you're training, not waiting.

Curious? Your first class is free. Come see what it feels like.
