How we train

Our Method

We take an ecological approach to teaching and learning — building fundamental skills through live training and games rather than memorising fixed sequences. This encourages students to adapt and develop techniques to suit their own body type and style, so the skills you build actually show up when you roll.

01

Games, not just drilling

Realistic, constraint-based games and live problem-solving you can apply in competitive settings — not endless repetition of moves in a vacuum.

02

Built for your body

An ecological approach means you adapt and develop techniques to suit your own body type and style, with a coach guiding you rather than dictating to you.

03

Mixed level, all welcome

Every class is mixed level. Complete beginners and advanced competitors train together, and our coaches adapt the session so everyone improves.

About

Why train at Counter Grappling

Counter Grappling is a Sheffield-based Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and No-Gi Grappling team established in 2022, training out of Stocksbridge and Oxspring. We offer morning and evening classes, as well as private tuition, from complete beginner through to advanced level coaching. We take an ecological approach to teaching and learning — building fundamental skills through live training and games rather than endless drilling. This encourages students to adapt and develop techniques to suit their own body type and style. All of our classes are mixed level, because we believe everybody can learn from each other, and our coaches are skilled at adapting sessions so that everyone — from the complete beginner to the advanced competitor — gets better every time they step on the mat.

A coach who invests in how you learn

At Counter Grappling, our coaches are serious about being the best they can be — so they've joined a community of forward-thinking coaches, led by Greg Souders, who train with the constraints-led approach: a modern, games-based method grounded in motor-learning science. You learn by solving real problems on the mat — and build skill faster.

Fantastic experience at Counter Grappling. From day one I have felt part of the team. I have only been going for around 5/6 months and already in that time noticed a huge difference in fitness. Jack and Paula are top coaches and will take the time and effort to help improve your game!

Level up your game with a fresh approach to training. Gone are the days of the "move collector" and an era of "problem solving" is upon us. Great atmosphere, great coaches.
Kieran O'ShaughnessyGoogle review
Great gym for anyone and everyone. Really detailed instruction and since the coaches regularly compete the techniques taught are all tested at a high level. Really friendly atmosphere and just all round great BJJ.

Great place to train from beginner all the way to advanced. The coaching is different to other jiu jitsu gyms — it's just not drilling but realistic games and concepts you can apply in competitive settings.

Really good training environment. Great instruction and guidance where techniques aren't over complicated, allowing you to figure things out for yourself with the help of the instructor if needed.
