How we train

The Constraints-Led Approach

Identity is coached using the Constraints-Led Approach (CLA) — a sports-science methodology where you learn by solving real problems through games instead of memorizing fixed drills. Skills built under pressure hold up under pressure.

01

Game-based learning

You solve live, constrained problems from day one — discovering what works for your body against real resistance.

02

Built for beginners

Community Week is designed for people on day zero. You won't be the only beginner in the room, and safety is the first rule on the mat.

03

Gi & No-Gi

Foundations and All-Levels classes in both gi and no-gi, plus open mat — a complete training week.

About

Why train at Identity Jiu-Jitsu

Identity Jiu-Jitsu is Seattle's International District's first and only Brazilian jiu-jitsu club. We didn't choose this neighborhood because it was convenient — we chose it because it's ours. Under new ownership, we're building something that belongs to this community: a principled coaching environment, a culture where everyone feels like they've already been here for years, and a place where anyone can walk in and feel welcome from day one. Identity is coached using the Constraints-Led Approach (CLA) — a sports-science methodology where you learn by solving real problems through games, not memorizing drills. Skills built under pressure hold under pressure. It's the same framework behind Standard Jiu-Jitsu in Rockville, Maryland, now running here in Seattle. We offer both Gi and No-Gi classes, and we're the most transit-accessible gym in the city — four blocks from the International District / Chinatown light rail station.

A coach who invests in how you learn

At Identity Jiu-Jitsu, our coaches are serious about being the best they can be — so they've joined a community of forward-thinking coaches, led by Greg Souders, who train with the constraints-led approach: a modern, games-based method grounded in motor-learning science. You learn by solving real problems on the mat — and build skill faster.

Loved by our community

I have never played a combat sport in my entire life and now I am almost a year in this gym. The people are just so nice and kind. They want the best for your growth and teach you how to find your style and what works best for you. There are always community events where you get to know each other better. It feels both a place for growth and nourishment — physically and mentally. If anyone gives it a try, please come say hi to me!

I checked out about 5 other gyms in the area before I came here. This gym teaches both gi and no-gi and the no-gi classes follow an ecological dynamics approach. Great instruction from all the coaches. But most importantly the gym puts effort into making a great community. The teammates are very skilled and everyone is very friendly. Best gym I have ever trained at!

This is the only cool place in Seattle. The only third space where you build a real community. They transformed me from zero skill into someone who walks freely through downtown at night. Diverse and welcoming. No egos. They don't hand out promotions easily which is how you know it's legit.

I'm a blue belt and mostly train no-gi. Tuan's CLA classes focus on problem solving and live situations instead of just drilling moves — has helped my game quite a bit.

One of the best gyms in Seattle. The vibe is welcoming and friendly. My favorite part is the ecological / CLA-based approach to training.

I joined Identity almost two years ago with no prior martial arts experience and found that I'd accidentally joined one of the best communities I've ever been a part of.
