About

Why train at Nimbus Grappling Athletics Club

Nimbus Grappling Athletics Club is dedicated to making submission grappling accessible to all. Our goal is to share the beautiful complexity of effective martial arts and impart both conceptual comprehension and technical proficiency. Our main influences are Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling and Judo. We train in the Fraserview area of East Vancouver, on Fraser Street between 26th and 27th Avenue. Classes use a concept-based, problem-solving approach with a focus on safety as well as your rate of development — there's plenty of room for trial and error so you learn faster, in a welcoming community and a clean facility. The name "Nimbus" reflects a sense of regional identity — there are few things more "Pacific Northwest" than a rain cloud. It's also an analogy between attitudes towards weather and attitudes towards skill: rain and inclement weather, while often seen as undesirable, are nonetheless integral to the very things most enjoy about fairer weather. Similarly, individual performances and specific accolades often sit atop a mountain of unglamorous but consistent practice. Nimbus aims to embody the idea of enjoying the process and to emphasize the endless journey of self-improvement. Results will come, but today we practice.

A coach who invests in how you learn

At Nimbus Grappling Athletics Club, our coaches are serious about being the best they can be — so they've joined a community of forward-thinking coaches, led by Greg Souders, who train with the constraints-led approach: a modern, games-based method grounded in motor-learning science. You learn by solving real problems on the mat — and build skill faster.

Jon Chan, Black Belt

Jon Chan

Black Belt

Owner & head coach. Jon started his martial arts journey in Muay Thai and MMA under Sensei Simon Posener, but quickly found a passion for the specific style of problem-solving that submission grappling offered. He began Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2017 under Filipe Matos at Roll Jiu Jitsu Academy, later found his home at On Guard Academy of Jiu Jitsu, and in June 2024 became a black belt under the tutelage of Matt Kwan. Inspired by both Matt Kwan and Rob Biernacki of Island Top Team, Jon emphasizes a concept-based approach to learning how to grapple, with a focus on safety as well as rate of development. He has trained with some of the best competitors and coaches from BC, and has trained and competed around the world including in San Diego, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, London, and Bangkok.

Clean facility and great attitudes all around. Jon Chan is one if not the top instructors in Vancouver. After 5+ years of training, working with him has helped me break through plateaus I was stuck on.

Jon is a great instructor who always carefully constructs each class with his students' needs in mind. With 13 years of BJJ experience, I can say his approach to the school is unparalleled to any other in the area.

The 101 and 201 class structure does a great job focusing on the fundamentals. The community is welcoming, the facility is clean, and there's plenty of room for trial and error which lets you learn faster.
