About

Why train at VBC Bardagaíþróttir

VBC Bardagaíþróttir is a combat-sports gym in Kópavogur offering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, boxing (hnefaleikar) and Muay Thai for adults and youth ages 3–17. We focus on a safe and constructive environment for everyone — no prior experience is needed when you start training with us. VBC's roots trace back to 1993, when Mats Söderström founded a Muay Thai club in Vallentuna, Sweden, that grew into a pioneering combat-sports operation in Stockholm. His student Henrik Nässen, a member of the Swedish national team, moved to Iceland in 2009 and began running small training groups. The club grew and eventually adopted the VBC name, and by 2013–2014 expansion led to its current home: a 900+ square-metre facility at Smiðjuvegi 28 in Kópavogur. Our values are ambition, team unity and resilience (Metnaður, Liðsheild, Seigla). We train hard so we can compete and perform under pressure, while always putting the safety of our training partners first — everything you learn at VBC is meant only for training and competition.

A coach who invests in how you learn

At VBC Bardagaíþróttir, our coaches are serious about being the best they can be — so they've joined a community of forward-thinking coaches, led by Greg Souders, who train with the constraints-led approach: a modern, games-based method grounded in motor-learning science. You learn by solving real problems on the mat — and build skill faster.
